Short Course Learning Skills

Self Paced 20-hour course to help you understand more about the learning process.

By understanding the learning process; you are better able to approach learning in a way that suits you; or the person you are trying to help learn.

Despite the huge amount of attention given to one’s personal education the majority of people don’t devote very much time at all to understanding how you can learn most effectively. The first thing to understand about learning is that the best way to learn is not the same for everyone. In other words we don’t all learn the same information in the same way. It's simple.

When a child doesn’t perform well at school, often the conventional response was to tell them they need to try hard, listen more, and apply more concentration perhaps – we have told children they just didn’t work hard enough in class. Although this may be true in some cases, this out-dated response to poor performance, whether made by a teacher, parent, or even students themselves, demonstrates serious misunderstandings of how learning takes place. This book sets out to correct such misunderstandings.

If you first understand how different people learn in different ways, you can then set about identifying how specific individuals can learn best and tailor the learning experience to that individual.

An enlightened approach to learning should take every aspect of the learning experience that is available to a person (what, where, when, how and why) into consideration. Any other approach to providing education may decrease the potential outcome that can be achieved.

Any good program of learning must be diverse in every aspect of what is offered, in order to realise the full learning potential of those being taught.

Our 20 hour courses are self paced and will help you understand a topic in a short amount of time. You can work through the course when you like- test yourself with mini-tests along the way. There are extra case studies or research you can undertake if you would really like to get into the topic. Once you have completed the lessons and self assessment tasks, there is a final exam undertaken online- you can then download your personalised certificate.

STUDENTS NEED TO BE MOTIVATED

No matter who they are; learning is always easier for the motivated student; and very difficult for the unmotivated.  Parents, teachers or employers may insist on someone studies, but even if they pass an exam; that doesn't mean they achieve long term learning unless the motivation is there.

Motivation is very simply, a process or mechanism that causes us to act or think in a certain way.  It is a general term for any part of the hypothetical psychological process that involves experiencing needs and drives, and the behaviour that leads to the goal that satisfies them.  It has three parts to it:
1. The environment that surrounds us
2. The way we perceive that environment
3. The action or attitude that occurs as a result of that perception.
Or, the inner forces that drive individuals to accomplish personal and organizational goals.

Environment

Our environment consists of both living and non-living things: people, plants, animals; air, water and solids. It may also consist of less tangible things, such as the opinions of people you meet, their moods, feelings and the things they communicate to you. Even the media (TV, radio, newspapers etc) is part of the environment.

Perceptions

What we perceive in our environment and how we perceive it will be affected by many factors, such as our mood, out attitude, our needs and concerns, our interests, our values, and our experience. We make a mistake when we assume that others perceive things and situations in the same way that we do, or when we assume that there is one correct perception. More accurate perceptions can only be gained by considering multiple perspectives, and alternative points of view.

Actions and attitudes

Because perceptions vary, actions and attitudes will also inevitably vary. Our attitudes and actions are largely learned, but they are also profoundly affected by our perceptions. Either way, these influences can cause us act and think in similar ways to other, or to think and act differently from each other.
